Athira Unni, PhD

Independent Researcher | Writer

Hello!

I am a literary scholar with 5+ years of international teaching and research experience. I have a doctorate in English (2021-2024) from Leeds Beckett University, UK. My doctoral research was on utopianism and social reproduction in contemporary South Asian and Caribbean fiction. I considered how utopianism in postcolonial contexts limit and redefine future-thinking in line with conditions of social reproduction - i.e. the reproduction of labor power - which is, I argue, related to envisioning a better society. This argument is presented in my latest published article:

Unni, A. (2024). Social Reproductive Labor and Uto/Dystopia: An Analysis of Leila, Midnight Robber and Woman World. Critique: Studies in Contemporary Fiction, 1–15. https://doi.org/10.1080/00111619.2024.2406777

My M.A. in English Language and Literature (2016-2018) was from the University of Hyderabad, India. I earned BA in English, BA in Sociology and a Creative Writing Certificate (2011- 2015) from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

I have worked as an English Lecturer, Assistant Professor of English, English Tutor, part-time development officer in EDI, freelance writer, editor, care worker, teaching intern, and palliative care volunteer in the United States, India and the UK.

I'm currently looking for teaching and research opportunities in my areas of interest and in the broader fields of Humanities and Social Sciences. Full CV available on request.
